El Mirador, Colombia
Located in El Sauce, Rosas, Cauca, Colombia, Heimer Montilla Ordoñez owns and operates farm called El Mirador. Heimer, his mother Cenaida, and his two sisters cultivate coffee on 2.5 acres of land. Heimer is the main provider for his family. His interest in coffee began at the age of 18 when he planted a coffee nursery. Unfortunately, the plants in the nursery were stolen, but Heimer was not deterred. He took a bank loan to start over and with guidance from his neighbors he planted 2700 trees of the Castillo varietal and another 2500 trees the following year. Heimer collaborates with an export company called Banexport to gain access to technical support for best agricultural practices. The goal of the partnership between Heimer and Banexport is to focus on quality and increase earnings from the sale of his coffee to improve his family’s livelihood.
