Many coffee roasters will tell you they were born with a passion for coffee. Our story goes a little differently.

 In 2011, Founder John Vallas made the transition from ten years in the Navy to coastal beach life. One afternoon, sitting on the floor in boardshorts, he rediscovered a piece of paper he had scribbled on years before. The words leapt off the page in a moment he remembers vividly nearly seven years later.

 The paper in his hands read, “All the things I’m passionate about: Time with Family. Surfing. Good coffee. Good food. Health. Community.”

 From this seed sprouted Swell Coffee Co.

Today, we have evolved into an artisan coffee roasting company. We feature transparent and direct trade coffees from farms around the world and treasure the dedicated work of craftsmen and women who tend to every step in the process—from the farm, to the roaster, to the cup. We believe the coffee industry has a responsibility to ensure the success of and build direct relationships with farmers who cultivate and harvest coffee, which allows roasters to work with pride and customers to sip locally and do good globally.

 In addition to our flagship Mission Beach café, Swell Coffee Co. has a café in the Del Mar and a roasting facility in Point Loma.
